Boyle, acting United States attorney for the District of Connecticut, announced Monday that a local home health care company and its owner have agreed to pay $28,246 to resolve civil charges that they employed a physical therapist who was excluded from all federal health care programs. The company, Careco Medical Inc., located at 396 Willetts Ave., and its owner and CEO, Helga Pfanner, provide skilled nursing services, medical social worker services, and rehabilitative therapies. In a release announcing the agreement, Boyle explained that when the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services, Office of the Inspector General excludes an individual or entity from federal health care programs, no program payments may be made for items or services provided by the excluded individual or entity.

DOT has released the following detour information: Access to the south side of the bridge from the north: •  Continue North of the bridge on Route 154 for 1.1 miles. Turn right onto Old Boston Post Road and travel for 0.7 miles to Main Street. Turn right onto Main Street and travel for 0.5 miles to Maple Avenue. Turn right onto Maple Avenue and continue for 1.3 miles until Route 154 is reached. Turn right onto Route 154 and follow for 0.9 miles bringing traffic to the North side of the structure.

Old Saybrook police said in a news release that Richard White, 37, of Torrington, has being charged with third-degree arson and third-degree burglary after he illegally entered a Hunter’s Ambulance facility in their town on Feb. 27 and lit and threw a Molotov cocktail that started a fire. He’s also wanted in Meriden, where police have an arrest warrant charging him with criminal attempt at first-degree arson and manufacturing of bombs for throwing an “already lit object” out of his driver’s side window and striking a Hunter’s Ambulance building in the city less than an hour after the Old Saybrook incident.

Those 75 and older the first group in the state’s Phase 1b can make appointments on a first-come, first-served basis by visiting ynhhs.org/covidvaccine. The New London site is the L+M Multispecialty Center, 194 Howard St., while the Old Saybrook site is the Old Saybrook Medical Center, 633 Middlesex Turnpike. Sites in North Haven and Trumbull also will open next week, and a Greenwich site will open the week of Jan. 25. Yale New Haven Health will add more sites as they are approved. Vaccinations only will be given to those who have an appointment.
