Ivy directed investigators to the victim, who suffered stab wounds to the face and body, and was pronounced dead at the scene. Authorities haven’t released the victim’s name.
Ivy was taken into custody and provided a statement about her role in the girl’s death. An older child of the woman was taken into protective custody by the Illinois Department of Child Family Services.
State’s Attorney Jeremy Karlin said evidence shows the girl’s death came from “exceptional brutal” behavior. He added that multiple wounds on the victim’s face were evidence of torture.
Karlin told the court he will seek a natural life sentence against Ivy because of alleged aggravating factors in the girl’s death.

Judge Nigel Graham read the charges to Hazel Ivy, 29, at her first court appearance via video conference Monday, stating the woman stabbed the child with a knife, causing her death. Ivy is facing two counts of first-degree murder.
Police responded to a possible homicide on Sunday at a public housing project, and Ivy directed officers to the second floor of an apartment. The victim was found stabbed 10 times in the face and body, authorities said.

GALESBURG A mother has been charged with first-degree murder in the fatal stabbing of her 7-year-old daughter on Sunday.
According to a Galesburg Police Department news release, police responded to the 1500 block of McKnight Street in reference to an unknown problem with a child. Upon arrival, a 7-year-old female victim was found dead from apparent knife wounds.
A joint investigation was conducted by the Galesburg Police Department, Knox County Sheriff s office, Knox County State s Attorney s Office and the Illinois State Police.
As a result of the investigation, the victim s mother, Hazel L. Ivy, 29, has been arrested and charged with murder in the first degree.

GALESBURG A Galesburg woman faces two counts of first-degree murder in the stabbing death of her 7-year-old daughter. She will be facing a natural life sentence, the most severe legal punishment available in Illinois.
