At the Barkhausen Waterfowl Preserve in Suamico, a five-year old yellow Labrador retriever named Truck is perfecting its practice by picking a dead fowl training dummy and bringing it toward shore. “The Youth Waterfowl Day is a chance for our community’s youth to come on out and experience what it’s like to be a waterfowl hunter, and experience the great outdoors,” said Matt Kriese, Brown County Parks Director.

It’s something they’re excited to do. “The parks department will be opening up the mountain bike trails at the reforestation camp the horse riding trails at Neshota Park, as well as the Fox River horse trails,” said Parks Director Matt Kriese. He says the trails got a lot of use last year during the COVID-19 Pandemic as people looked outdoors for entertainment. “The overall recreational use trends had been increasing even prior to 2020 with COVID,” Kriese said. “We expect that increased trend to continue through 2021.”

But starting Monday, buildings on the Eagles Nest site are coming down. With a slow and deliberate approach, the excavator driver lined up his first target. Four buildings are set to be demolished this week on the 4.5-acre site in Green Bay, including the decades-old restaurant, and banquet hall called the Eagles Nest. “Now, it’s just time to get those buildings down, start with a clean slate, and go from there,” said Matt Kriese, Brown County Parks Director.
