KUALA LUMPUR, March 7 Following the reopening of schools earlier this week, health experts contacted by Malay Mail have agreed that there is a risk of students bringing home the Covid-19 virus, and in turn infecting members of their multi-generational families especially endangering the elderly, who make up the bulk of Covid-19 -related deaths. While there is a consensus that schools should be reopened to allow students to catch up on the education they have missed out on due to multiple school closures in the past 12 months, the experts, however, suggested ways to minimise the risk of infection.

Primary schools reopen in Uttar Pradesh, check SOP to be followed

Guidelines have been issued to safely resume schooling for classes 1 to 5. Earlier in February, Primary Education Officer Yogendra Kumar made the announcement that schools would be reopening. He said, “The government ordered reopening schools from February 10 for classes 6 and 8, including all government and private schools in Uttar Pradesh’s Moradabad.” Later on Additional Chief Secretary (Basic Education) Renuka Kumar to the DG of Basic Education Department confirmed what the Primary Education Officer said and added that the Primary schools will be reopening from March 1.

This news broke out after some of the districts in Maharashtra announced lockdown and Jalna district announced that the schools and colleges will be closed till the end of March. Andhra Pradesh was the first state in the country to reopen the schools in a phased manner. Adimulapu Suresh clarified that the, “The syllabus has been condensed and the academic calendar has also been issued. We are at a stage where schools and colleges have almost returned to normalcy. Yet, fake news like this is becoming viral.”
