A picture book about a transgender child has ignited a debate in the Eanes school district over if and when to talk about gender identity in the classroom.
After a fourth grade teacher at Forest Trail Elementary showed a video in which the book “Call Me Max” by Kyle Lukoff was read aloud on March 4, social media was flooded with posts from parents weighing in, and many parents raised the issue at a school board meeting on March 9. A third grade teacher at Valley View Elementary, also in the Eanes district, also read the book to her class. The book tells the story of a transgender elementary student learning how to talk about his identity with family and friends.
PUSD s pre-K through second grade came back on March 4 and students in grades 3 to 5 followed on Monday. Middle and high schools were on track to reopen this Thursday after the state moved Alameda County into the red tier.

The Pleasanton-based José Maria Amador chapter of Daughters of the American Revolution held its annual student awards ceremony Feb. 13 via Zoom to recognize 13 students who took part in its 2020 programs.
Shreya Balasubramanian, a senior at Dougherty Valley High School in San Ramon, won the DAR Good Citizen Award for demonstrating qualities of dependability, service, leadership and patriotism. Jacqueline Martin of Dublin High and Mia Rodriquez of California High in San Ramon were awarded honorable mention.
Feb. 23—BLAKELY — A few young students clung to their parents on the first day of full-time, in-person learning at Valley View Elementary School. Others needed directions to their classrooms, since it was their first time back in the building in almost a year. Valley View elementary, middle and intermediate school students in kindergarten through sixth grade returned to their classrooms .
Back to school for students in Lackawanna County

BLAKELY, Pa. Snow on the ground is not a normal sight for the first day of school.
But even though it is February and students have technically been taking classes online for months, the first-day jitters are still very real here at Valley View Elementary School. Last night, I know speaking to teachers and even for the kids, it was hard getting to sleep because you were so excited. It is like the first day of school all over, said Valley View Elementary School Principal Maria Kishel.
