A picture book about a transgender child has ignited a debate in the Eanes school district over if and when to talk about gender identity in the classroom.
After a fourth grade teacher at Forest Trail Elementary showed a video in which the book “Call Me Max” by Kyle Lukoff was read aloud on March 4, social media was flooded with posts from parents weighing in, and many parents raised the issue at a school board meeting on March 9. A third grade teacher at Valley View Elementary, also in the Eanes district, also read the book to her class. The book tells the story of a transgender elementary student learning how to talk about his identity with family and friends.

The sweet illustrated book tells the story of a young transgender boy who begins to make friends as he comes to terms with his identity. This was enough to prompt a flurry of complaints from parents, who demanded the teacher in question be fired.
“We had some parents [who] came to us and said, ‘Why was this shown, is this in your curriculum, where is this in your curriculum’. It wasn’t,” said school district superintendent Tom Leonard.

A teacher in Austin, Texas, came under fire for reading a children s book about a transgender boy to her fourth grade class, prompting the district to call the book inappropriate and offer counseling to students who listened.
Transgender allies defended the teacher and the book, Call Me Max, by Stonewall Award-winning author Kyle Lukoff. It features a transgender child explaining his identity, and is aimed at children in early elementary school.
Several parents wrote letters complaining to Forest Trail Elementary, with some calling for the teacher to be fired. In response, Eanes Independent School District s chief learning officer, Susan Fambrough, explained in an email to parents that Call Me Max had been included on a list of diverse books circulated among teachers but was not appropriate to be read aloud to an entire elementary-age class.
