Small Georgia cattle farm grows up with help from UGA

FORSYTH — What Joseph Egloff began as a “little hobby” in 2011 is now a full-time cattle ranch with a meat packing plant that serves customers from Florida to North Carolina. “I had eight head of cattle and a day job to pay for my cow habit,” Egloff said of Rocking Chair Ranch Cattle in Forsyth. “Then it exploded on us. What started out as a little hobby had become a real job, and after about three years, we were up to about 58 head of cattle a year.” As the business continued to grow, Egloff turned to the University of Georgia’s Small Business Development Center for help.

Photo: MAC During the pandemic, many companies were just trying to survive, let alone market their goods and services to foreign buyers.   Yet the annual Atlanta Metro Export Challenge grant winners in 2020 proved that opportunity abounds for export sales with the right level of support, even in the most uncertain times.   John Woodward Participants used $5,000 grants to internationalize and translate their websites, ensure compliance with Europe’s privacy regulations, gain ISO certifications and virtually present products to foreign clients in a word, they “pivoted” when it became evident that travel and trades shows would not be an option.  

April 29 - Federal and State Small Business Resources collaborate on disaster preparedness webinar series

April 29, 2021 - The University of Georgia Small Business Development Center (SBDC), a Public Service and Outreach unit of the University of Georgia, invites small business owners to a no-cost educational webinar to help them prepare and recover from a hurricane and other disasters. The two-part webinar will take place on May 11 and May 12 from 10 a.m. to noon. On May 11, topics will include disaster impacts, terminology, and re-entry permits an processes, business continuity planning, and reflections on the recent weather-related emergency in Texas and its impact on small businesses. On May 12, topics include emergency loan programs available to small businesses and farmers/ranchers from the SBA and USDA, and insurance concerns.
