Atchison County, Kansas jail escapee back in custody, sheriff s office says

Updated: 9:30 AM CDT Apr 24, 2021 KMBC 9 News Staff A man who escaped from a county jail in Kansas early Thursday has been taken into custody.According to the Atchison County Sheriff s Office, Taggart Darnell Lee, 20, was taken into custody just after 2 a.m. with help from the Kansas Highway Patrol.Authorities said they will release more information later Saturday.The sheriff s office said that Lee had been in custody on aggravated robbery charges since Jan. 8, stemming from a New Year s Eve robbery.Sheriff Jack Laurie said an early investigation into the escape revealed that several security policies were not followed by jail security staff, which allowed Lee to manipulate a door lock into an unsecured area of the jail, and then outside.Laurie said a jail officer, who was unarmed, pursued Lee for several blocks on foot before Lee picked up a piece of lumber and threatened the officer.
