The notion of funding beach activities through corporate sponsorships is hardly new. Treating lifeguard towers like bus-bench advertising, for instance, has been floating around since the 1990s.
Back in 1992, then-Beach Director Joe Waller pitched a wide range of corporate sponsorship possibilities for the beach. For example, Hawaiian Tropic might pay the county to put its logos on lifeguard towers, The News-Journal reported in November 1993. Enlisting beach-toll collectors to hand out product samples was also floated.
