Insurers Seek to Find Ways to Make Pandemics Insurable
LONDON – When much of the global economy locked down last year, insurers, facing estimated losses of more than $100 billion globally, reached straight for their red pens to strike pandemic cover from all new business policies.
Denis Kessler, chairman and CEO of French reinsurer SCOR, summed it up when he told a recent conference that pandemic risk was like war.
“We exclude war – it’s not insurable,” he said.
But as industries spanning travel and hospitality to construction and manufacturing revert to a new normal, huge demand is causing insurers to figure out how they can put pandemic risk back in policies without making them prohibitively expensive.
63% of marketing leaders say that the coronavirus pandemic has impacted their teams productivity and responsiveness, and 11% say that responding to global environments is a barrier to productivity. Even with that, marketing investments are expected to grow by 14% in 2021, according to Onevox Creative Solutions.

Five students from the Howard Payne University School of Nursing are prepared to become the first graduates from the university’s nursing program. The first graduating class includes Adrien Barrientos of Lewisville; Hanna Crow of Brownwood; Josie McClung of Brownwood; Ashley Strong of Brownwood; and Kira Teel of San Antonio.
The students will be presented with their degrees at 3 p.m. on Saturday, May 8, during the second of HPU’s two Commencement ceremonies that day, both of which will be held in Mims Auditorium.
“I’ve seen growth in the self-confidence of this group,” said Dr. Nina Ouimette, dean of the School of Nursing. “I’ve also seen them grow in what they thought the role of a nurse was, to now, understanding what the professional role is.”
