Batavia teacher named Kane County Educator of the Year

Batavia teacher named Kane County Educator of the Year Susan Jones, who teaches at Alice Gustafson Elementary School in Batavia, was honored in a ceremony Friday as Kane County Educator of the Year.   Updated 4/30/2021 9:40 PM A special-education teacher in Batavia Unit District 101 was named Kane County Educator of the Year Friday. Susan Jones, who teaches at Alice Gustafson Elementary School, has been a teacher for 33 years, according to a news release from the Kane County Regional Office of Education.   She received a $3,000 prize from the ROE, to be used for a project of her choosing at her school. The ceremony honored nominees from the 2019-2020 school year, after last year s ceremony was postponed due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

Batavia Dist 101 considers rebuilding several schools, possibly eliminating one of them

Posted4/26/2021 5:30 AM If Batavia Unit District 101 school buildings got grades, none would be proud of its report card. Three of the eight are in poor condition, according to a consultant s analysis. The rest are in fair shape. None are good or excellent.   Taking care of all the must and should do fix-up items would cost more than $86 million. That s why a district committee says it would be more cost-effective to replace up to four elementary schools, and possibly eliminate one. But first, the committee is asking district residents what they think. Now it s time to get a little feedback, Superintendent Lisa Hichens told the Batavia City Council last week. Because whatever vision we have for our facilities in Batavia, they should reflect the values of the community.

Snow day won t grant reprieve for students in remote-learning era

Updated 1/25/2021 4:57 PM Remember when a good winter storm meant no school and students making a beeline for the nearest sled hill? With most school districts now better equipped for remote learning, traditional snow days might become a thing of the past.   We now have the tools necessary, in the hands of teachers and students, to pivot to remote learning at any time during the school year, said Lisa Hichens, superintendent of Batavia Unit District 101. We are practiced and more comfortable with this learning mode and prefer to keep the school calendar intact as much as possible. Many suburban school districts currently allowing hybrid classes are bracing to switch to full remote learning amid predictions of an overnight winter storm.
