Prolonged winter of US discontent? SECTIONS Last Updated: Feb 06, 2021, 09:11 AM IST Share Reuters Punxsutawney Phil s handler A.J. Dereume holds the famous groundhog during a socially distanced and remote event due to the coronavirus disease on the 135th Groundhog Day at Gobblers Knob in Punxsutawney, Pennsylvania, U.S., February 2, 2021. Related Faith in pollsters and political soothsayers has been hitting dramatic lows of late around the world, but the US public has always held non-human prognosticators in non-political spheres in higher regard. Which is why year after year, that nation wants to know what veteran weather forecaster Punxsutawney Phil the groundhog has to say about the likelihood of a longer winter or an early spring. On Groundhog Day (February 2) this year at Gobbler’s Knob in Punxsutawney, Pennsylvania, Phil saw his shadow, which traditionally means six more weeks of winter.

You were in need of more bad news, right? On the bright side, Buckeye Chuck, Ohio s favorite groundhog prognosticator, didn t see his shadow, so he (or his handlers, really) predicted an early spring! In the classic movie, “Groundhog Day,” Bill Murray s character Phil lives and re-lives the same day over and over, always awakening to Sonny & Cher s “I Got You Babe” on his clock-radio. He doubts this endless cycle will ever be broken.

Groundhogs hold differing views | News, Sports, Jobs

Feb 3, 2021 It seems that no matter where we turn these days, we find controversy, including places such as Punxsutawney, Pa.; Marion, Ohio; and French Creek, W.Va. For on Tuesday, there was a split among the Tri-State Area’s rodent forecasters of winter weather. Punxsutawney Phil, the wiley veteran, the seer of seers, the prognosticator of all prognosticators, emerged from his burrow and saw his shadow, which means we can expect six more weeks of winter. But Buckeye Chuck, who lives just outside of Columbus, failed to see his shadow, as did French Creek Freddie, which means they say we can expect an early spring.
