Ohio s official weather-predicting groundhog, Buckeye Chuck, is set to make his annual announcement today if there will be an early spring.
Buckeye Chuck began predicting spring s arrival in the 1970s and was named after Charlie Evers, who helped create the Marion Groundhog Day Celebration. The Ohio General Assembly later declared Buckeye Chuck the official State Groundhog in 1979.
Buckeye Chuck has recently predicted early springs in 2020 and 2019.

Buckeye Chuck s prediction is the opposite of his groundhog friend in Pennsylvania, Punxsutawney Phil, who predicted six more weeks of winter.
Buckeye Chuck has been predicting what the next six weeks of weather have in store for us since 1979 when he became Ohio s official groundhog.
Here s how Chuck makes his predictions: if he sees his shadow, Ohioans will face another six weeks of winter-like weather. If he doesn t see his shadow, spring will come early.

This morning, Pennsylvania’s own world-famous groundhog Punxsutawney Phil saw his shadow, predicting six more weeks of winter.
For the first-ever virtual Groundhog Day celebration, visitors from all over the world tuned in to see Phil make his highly anticipated weather prognostication for the 135
th time.
The story of the holiday tradition declares that if the groundhog emerges early on the morning of February 2 and sees his shadow, we will have six more weeks of winter weather. Should he not see his shadow, we will have an early spring.
The annual event began in 1886, when a spirited group of groundhog hunters dubbed themselves “The Punxsutawney Groundhog Club” and proclaimed Punxsutawney Phil to be the one and only weather prognosticating groundhog.
