More than 20 suspicious fires reported in downtown Nanaimo

Quick work by firefighters kept it from spreading to the interior. “To date, our officers have identified several persons of interest who may be responsible for some of these fires,” said Nanaimo RCMP Const. Gary O’Brien. “There are still many fires that remain unsolved and this is troubling.” Fire Chief Tim Doyle said the biggest concern is that some businesses have combustible material stored outside at night. He said dumpsters should be locked and emptied daily. Doyle offered these prevention tips: Materials like cardboard, pallets, used cooking oil and packing material should be taken away. Clean out areas next to buildings, as well as alcoves and alleys. Keep lawns cut and maintain other landscaped areas to reduce the amount of flammable material.

Nanaimo firefighters called to help rescue a stranded sea lion

NANAIMO, B.C. In the past 20 years, Fire Chief Tim Doyle of Nanaimo Fire Rescue can’t recall ever being involved in a call to assist a stranded sea lion. “I don t know if we have ever done a rescue like this,” Doyle told CTV News Vancouver Island. “We’ve responded to horses stuck in mud, cats and dog rescues, but nothing like this.” Around 7:45 p.m. Thursday, crews responded to Invermere Beach and assisted a marine rescue group in lifting a 350-kilogram male sea lion into a carrier, then onto a van for transport. The Vancouver-based Marine Mammal Rescue Centre got a call about the stranded animal late Thursday morning. When they arrived in the afternoon, they could tell the male sea lion was not in great condition.
