Samaritan s Feet, Rotary clubs team up to put new shoes on 1,000 JMCSS students
Pre-k students at Nova Early Learning Center entered the gym Wednesday morning to an applause from a couple dozen adults who were there to see them.
The adults were mostly from the three variations of the Rotary Club in Jackson and Samaritan’s Feet, a non-profit organization that works with groups across the country to put new shoes on the feet of children.
More than 200 children at Nova were getting a new pair of shoes. Wednesday was the third day of the effort as Rotary members and other volunteers showed up at three schools this week and put socks and new shoes on more than 1,000 children’s feet.
A Union University professor, who started his educational career in Jackson-Madison County Schools with teaching and administrative roles, will take a vacated school board seat until the August 2022 general election.
The Madison County Commission appointed educational leadership professor Ken Newman to the District 2 school board seat, vacated by board member O’Neal Henley’s resignation. Henley was elected in August 2020, meaning the person elected to the seat in 2022 will serve until 2024.
“I am very humbled and appreciative of their support and trust in me,” Newman said after the commission s appointment. “I’m going to do the best I can do.”
