COVID-19: Noida Metro resumes service as over 2,300 passengers ride trains

Over 2,300 passengers on Wednesday took a ride on the Noida-Greater Noida metro which resumed service after a hiatus of over a month due to COVID-19 curbs, officials said.
The passenger services on the Aqua Line that connects Noida and Greater Noida were suspended on May 1 as the second wave of the coronavirus pandemic ravaged the region.

Amid a surge in coronavirus cases, the Uttar Pradesh government Thursday decided to increase the duration of weekend lockdown by 24 hours, announcing that it will now cover Mondays too. The weekend closure will now be applicable from Friday 8 pm till Tuesday 7 am, Additional Chief Secretary (Home) Navneet Sehgal said here.
He said that consequent to the decision, all shops and establishments will now remain closed between Friday 8 pm and Tuesday 7 am.
Presently, the weekend lockdown in the state begins at Friday 8 pm and ends at Monday 7 am.
The decision was taken at a review meeting chaired by Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath and will be implemented across the state starting this Friday.
The Noida Metro Rail Corporation (NMRC) will suspend its services on Saturdays and Sundays in view of the weekend curfew imposed in Uttar Pradesh to check the spread of COVID-19, officials said. In an order issued on Monday, the NMRC said the decision is aimed at discouraging the outdoor movement of people amid the pandemic. Keeping in view the ongoing large scale spread of COVID-19 pandemic and accordingly to discourage the passengers from moving out on curfew days, the NMRC has decided not to run any service on the curfew days declared by the government, NMRC managing director Ritu Maheshwari said.
