GIRARD As the city tries to sell the upper Girard Lake property, city Engineer Dennis Meek recommended it may be best for the city to retain ownership of the dam which needs repairs and sell the surrounding lake land separately. City council had decided, after much discussion, on an appraisal and engineering study to put the 173-acre upper lake property up for sale. Mayor James Melfi said at Monday’s council meeting that the property received one bid of $1 million, plus a pledge to make improvements to the property, bringing it to $2.6 million. The minimum bid was $4.3 million. The city purchased the property in 1995 for $2.5 million and with interest the city paid $5 million. Melfi said the property was paid off in 2015.
