GIRARD With interest from Liberty and Weathersfield officials in forming a fire district, Girard fire Chief Ken Bornemiss will set up a meeting with chiefs from the two townships to study the pros and cons.
Mayor James Melfi told city council Monday that Bornemiss will begin the talks first with Liberty fire Chief Gus Birch and Weathersfield fire Chief Tom Lambert to go over the advantages and disadvantages of forming a district involving the three communities and possibly others.
“We are going to let the fire chiefs begin the talks, who will then report to their officials what has taken place. We will see what they come up with, and then the leaders will sit down,” Melfi said.
GIRARD As the city tries to sell the upper Girard Lake property, city Engineer Dennis Meek recommended it may be best for the city to retain ownership of the dam which needs repairs and sell the surrounding lake land separately.
City council had decided, after much discussion, on an appraisal and engineering study to put the 173-acre upper lake property up for sale.
Mayor James Melfi said at Monday’s council meeting that the property received one bid of $1 million, plus a pledge to make improvements to the property, bringing it to $2.6 million. The minimum bid was $4.3 million.
The city purchased the property in 1995 for $2.5 million and with interest the city paid $5 million. Melfi said the property was paid off in 2015.
Girard Mayor Jim Melfi stands next to an ice-covered Upper Girard Lake last week and talks about efforts to sell the lake and surrounding property so it can be redeveloped. The city previously received one bid for $1 million, but the minimum bid is $4.2 million, so council is looking at its options for the 750-acre property.
