The rumored Apple iMac21,1 might be powered by a bizarre Intel-Qualcomm hybrid

We learned back in February that Apple has been working on redesigning its upcoming 2021 iMac lineup too like it is doing so with its other Mac products. And that s because Apple is expected to be using its own ARM-based M1 processors in its new iMacs as well. The two models, which are the 21.5-inch and the 27-inch, respectively, are reportedly codenamed J456 and J457 according to a report from Bloomberg. However, last month 9to5Mac discovered a couple of new Apple iMac device IDs dubbed iMac21,1 and iMac21,2 in the macOS Big Sur 11.3 beta update. While we do not know for sure if these new IDs are the same as those stated in the Bloomberg report, what we can say is that a Geekbench run of the iMac 21,1 model was spotted today by a Twitter user who aptly calls himself Leakbench . While leaked Geekbench scores themselves aren t always reason enough to get excited over, what really caught our attention is the bizarre and uncanny processor that is seemingly powering the system.

Intel Alder Lake-P CPU makes its first appearance on Geekbench 5 – KitGuru

We’ve known that Intel is working on Alder Lake-P processors for laptops for a while now, but we haven’t had much indication of performance or specs. That is beginning to change this week, as an Alder Lake-P CPU has finally appeared in a benchmark database.  According to the Geekbench 5 entry found by @Benchleaks, this unnamed Alder Lake-P processor features 14x cores and 20 threads. This “odd” core configuration is because of Alder Lake’s hybrid design, featuring big cores (high-performance) and small cores (high-efficiency), where the big cores feature Hyper-threading and the small ones don’t. The 14C/20T core configuration is achieved by using 6x big cores with HT (12x threads) and 8x small cores. This results in 6 + 8 = 14 cores and 12 + 8 = 20 threads. According to previous leaks and given the 6+8 core configuration, this processor might well be the flagship SKU of the series.
