City, county groups seek help in addressing homelessness SIANDHARA BONNET, Rapid City Journal July 4, 2021 FacebookTwitterEmail RAPID CITY, S.D. (AP) Augostine Rosales said he’d likely be dead if it wasn’t for the Cornerstone Rescue Mission. Rosales never thought he or his siblings would amount to much of anything growing up poor with an alcoholic mother in Rapid City and later in Colorado. He spent 15 years in prison and got out in 2013. In 2019, he became homeless trying to keep up with child support and paying $1,000 a month in rent. Rosales said he worked at Que Pasa for four years as the cook when things went south. He quit in January. In December 2019, he applied for a job as the cook at Cornerstone.

City of Nanaimo bans open fires

Devices allowed for cooking and heating include cooking devices fuelled by propane, natural gas, naphtha, kerosene, charcoal briquettes or electricity such as barbecues, grills, smokers and portable or fixed campfire devices. Ensure that barbecue briquettes are fully extinguished after use. The fire danger rating on much of Vancouver Island is high to extreme. As of Saturday evening, two wildfires were burning one near Port Alberni, and one on the border of Juan de Fuca Provincial Park. We are already seeing out of control fires around B.C. with devastating outcomes.”

More than 20 suspicious fires reported in downtown Nanaimo

Quick work by firefighters kept it from spreading to the interior. “To date, our officers have identified several persons of interest who may be responsible for some of these fires,” said Nanaimo RCMP Const. Gary O’Brien. “There are still many fires that remain unsolved and this is troubling.” Fire Chief Tim Doyle said the biggest concern is that some businesses have combustible material stored outside at night. He said dumpsters should be locked and emptied daily. Doyle offered these prevention tips: Materials like cardboard, pallets, used cooking oil and packing material should be taken away. Clean out areas next to buildings, as well as alcoves and alleys. Keep lawns cut and maintain other landscaped areas to reduce the amount of flammable material.
