Photo / Supplied Hawkes Bay Today By: Michael Fowler One of Napier s most prominent buildings to succumb to the February 3, 1931, Hawke s Bay earthquake was the Masonic Hotel. The photo shows sailors doing body recoveries at the Masonic Hotel. One of the employees of the hotel, a barman, David Evans, died trying to escape the building. A family story is told that his sister-in-law Gert Begley went with his son, Noel, about three days after the earthquake to try and find him. Sailors helped and located his body under the rubble.

Emergency services were first called to Harold Holt Ave, Onekawa, about 6pm on Tuesday after reports of a firearm incident. A male teenager sustained moderate injuries and was transported to Hawke s Bay Hospital. He was discharged on Wednesday morning. Read More

Photo / File Hawkes Bay Today A 44-year-old man has been charged with criminally endangering public safety after a three-month investigation of an inferno at BP Bay View north of Napier. The man is understood to have already appeared in court, and is currently remanded to appear in Napier District Court on June 2. The fire happened mid-evening on the Friday night of January 15 when the State Highway 2 station – the last fuel stop for northbound highway traffic heading towards Taupo and Wairoa.
