A disabled man has won the battle to stay in his home after Kāinga Ora served him a seven-day eviction notice because of a slip near the property during the Napier floods. The man s mother, Bronwyn Edwards, fought the eviction decision by Whatever It Takes Trust Inc (WIT), which manages the tenancy.
Her son, a grand mal epileptic whom Hawke s Bay Today has decided not to name, was asked to vacate the Milton Rd property on Napier Hill after a geotechnical report by Kāinga Ora.

Napier tourism operators have raised concerns about new pedestrian safety measures set to be installed on Marine Parade.
The busy coastal road will be closed for about a month from Wednesday until June 4, while Napier City Council installs three raised courtesy crossings.

Bronny Edwards says the news of eviction caused a great deal of stress for both her and her son. The house is owned by Kāinga Ora and managed by Napier service organisation Whatever It Takes (WIT). Kāinga Ora regional director east North Island Naomi Whitewood said the property was affected to the point of Kāinga Ora deeming it as unsafe to live in. “Our own geotech report recommended the house remained unoccupied until several conditions were met,” she said. Edwards, who asked that her son not be named for health reasons, said the news of eviction caused a “great deal of stress for them both”, resulting in her son having several seizures.
