Bronny Edwards and her son endured two months of stress and worry, after a seven-day eviction notice was handed to them in March. The house is owned by Kāinga Ora, the Crown agency that provides rental housing for New Zealanders in need, and is managed by Hawke’s Bay organisation Whatever It Takes (WIT), whose services include social housing. According to its website, it manages 65 rental properties. On November 9 last year, 242 millimetres of rain flooded many parts of Napier and caused several slips. Part of the Napier Hill collapsed onto a property next door, with some debris landing in the garden, but it didn’t affect the house.

Bronny Edwards says the news of eviction caused a great deal of stress for both her and her son. The house is owned by Kāinga Ora and managed by Napier service organisation Whatever It Takes (WIT). Kāinga Ora regional director east North Island Naomi Whitewood said the property was affected to the point of Kāinga Ora deeming it as unsafe to live in. “Our own geotech report recommended the house remained unoccupied until several conditions were met,” she said. Edwards, who asked that her son not be named for health reasons, said the news of eviction caused a “great deal of stress for them both”, resulting in her son having several seizures.
