The Select Board approved Cease & Desist notices to be sent to the occupants residing in the seasonal homes of Woods Pond campgrounds, located on King’s Way, at the Jan. 25 Select Board meeting.
The board emphasized that it is not safe for residents living past season due to the lack of potable water, and they must leave the premises.
It was previously reported that several occupants residing at these seasonal homes have been living there illegally year-round. Many of these cottage-style units in this part of Woods Pond are restricted to seasonal use from April 16 – October 10.
Most of the campgrounds consist of shared communal wells and septic systems, both of which aren’t designed and sustainable for year-round use.
Members of the Charter Study Committee gave an update to the Select Board at the Jan. 25 meeting, reviewing recommendations and revisions being discussed for the modernized Town Charter.
Committee Chair Brian Giovanoni spoke about some of the debates being had among committee members at recent meetings.
Updating the Charter to reflect the use of gender-neutral pronouns was the biggest topic, and its an issue that still divides officials.
“We looked at our communities. The majority have changed to gender-neutral. We reached out to LGBTQ reps in order to discuss their opinions. They indicated this is the standard approach. We did our research,” said Paula Fay, Committee member.
Action to change Rochester Road Bridge to Medal of Honor Bridge
The Board announced that legislation is being proposed in the State House to change the name of the new Rochester Road Bridge to the Medal of Honor Bridge.
The proposed name is being chosen in recognition of three Medal of Honor recipients from the towns of Middleboro and Carver: Lowell M. Maxham; Patrick Regan and Wayne M. Caron. Maxham is from Carver while Regan and Caron are from Middleboro.
The legislation is being spearheaded by Massachusetts Representative Susan Williams Gifford, whose office provided the language for the bill.
Select Board Chair Leilani Dalpe, while reading the bill to the public so the Board can vote to approve the proposed legislation, noted that the town of Middleboro is the only town in the nation to have multiple Medal of Honor recipients.
MIDDLEBORO It was previously reported that people living at seasonal homes on the King’s Way portion of the Wood’s Pond campgrounds have been there illegally year-round.
Many of these cottage-style units in this part of Woods Pond are restricted to seasonal use from April 16 to Oct. 10.
The Middleboro Board of Selectmen announced earlier this week that the town’s health officer will work with the police department to find out which of the homes are now occupied and evict the tenants.
Most of the campgrounds consist of shared communal wells and septic systems, both of which aren’t designed and sustainable for year-round use. There is specuation that this year-round use has contributed to some recent failings of septic systems, as well as concern for possible contamination of wells.
