Andy Grant looks into the history of the Romford Hill mound

It was not unusual that the surrounding ditch would fill with water and effectively become a moat. It is highly likely that a mill existed in this area from at least 1450, as it appears to have been mentioned in the will of Anthony Cooke in 1478. However, the 1618 map also shows nearby “Mill Water” – which might equally allude to the previous presence of a Water Mill. Black’s Bridge at Raphael Park was also previously known as Watermen s Bridge in 1777. The Cooke family held Gidea Hall until 1657, when Sir Edward Sydenham sold the whole estate to Richard Emes. Within two years, Emes sold his three manors, but retained a parcel of freehold land fronting Main Road (then called Romford Hill), which included the mill and his residence.

New plans to turn former Steam Laundry warehouse into 3 homes

Salisbury Steam Laundry plans THE site of the former Salisbury Steam Laundry warehouse could be turned into two houses, under new plans. The application, submitted by OB Architecture, is for the retention and extension of an existing warehouse to create a four bedroom dwelling and the erection of a new three bedroom dwelling . The site exists as a courtyard used for car parking and comprises a brick industrial building, previously occupied as a workshop and store. The design and access statement says the planning history over the last 14 years confirms that there is no objection to the residential development of this brownfield site , adding: The site meets Wiltshire Core Strategy’s Core Policy 1 and falls within the Housing Policy Boundary of Salisbury.
