URBANA â A day after she tried twice to block the Champaign County Board from filling a vacant seat, county Executive Darlene Kloeppel said Friday that she was preparing a written veto of the boardâs vote to approve its newest member, Cameron Raab of Champaign.
Kloeppel said she told the board Thursday evening that she was vetoing its unanimous vote approving Raab to fill the District 6 seat vacated by Mike Ingram, who resigned after being elected recorder of deeds in November.
Kloeppelâs oral veto was ultimately ignored.
Stateâs Attorney Julia Rietz warned Kloeppel that her action could be viewed as contemptuous of a court order issued earlier in the day. County Clerk Aaron Ammons swore Raab in, and he was seated for the Thursday night board meeting.
URBANA â A Champaign County judge has denied a temporary restraining order sought by County Executive Darlene Kloeppel, who was seeking to block the county board from filling a board vacancy Thursday evening.
In an emergency telephone hearing Thursday, Judge Jason Bohm denied Kloeppelâs request, saying she wouldnât be irreparably harmed without a temporary restraining order.
Kloeppel sued the county board in June, contending she has the authority to fill vacancies in elected county offices rather than the board chairman.
In either case, an appointment to fill a vacancy is subject to a county board vote.
County board Chairman Kyle Patterson scheduled a special meeting for Thursday, ahead of the regular county board meeting, to fill the unexpired District 6 seat of Mike Ingram, who resigned after being elected as recorder of deeds.
