The Malawi Electoral Commission (MEC) has moved to fill existing vacancies and has since invited Expression of Interest for the provision of consultancy services, which will facilitate the recruitment of the officers.
Among others, the pollster intends to recruit Chief Elections Officer, Director of Electoral Services and Director of Administration and Human Resources.

In a press release issued on Monday, MEC is inviting suitably qualified consultants to submit sealed expressions of interest to participate in the procurement of consultancy services for recruitment of the officers in question.

He replaces Sam Alfandika, who resigned last month to join United Nations (UN) as Chief Elections Advisor.
In a statement on Wednesday, MEC Chairperson Justice Chifundo Kachale said Potani’s appointment was with immediate effect.
“Mr Potani is a Deputy Chief Elections Officer (operations) and has been with the Commission for 21 years. He joined the Commission as Elections Service Officer and has been rising through the ranks,” said Justice Kachale.
Meanwhile, MEC is yet to announce dates for by elections in Nkhata Bay Central Constituency, Chikwembere Ward in Blantyre North and Lalanje Ward in Nsanje Lalanje which fell vacant.

Alfandika Resigns as MEC CEO
The Commission s Chairperson, Justice Dr. Chifundo Kachale, has confirmed the development in a statement. We received Mr. Alfandika s notice of resignation on Monday, April 26, 2021. The Commission will meet soon to relevant discuss modalities of filling the vacancy arising from the development, said Justice Kachale.
Alfandika s resignation notice partly reads; my resignation notice is due to the fact that I will be taking up another challenging opportunity with the United Nations family as International Elections Adviser.
Meanwhile, MEC says it may now resume regular discharge of its constitution and statutory functions.
In the statement, the Commission says this follows a formal notification that commissioners, Jean Mathanga and Linda Kunje, applied for and were granted permission to commence judiciary review proceedings and order staying the decision to rescind their appointments as commissioners of MEC.
