repercussions for the election this year and also for the future of american democracy. it is arguably the most important election case to reach the supreme court since bush v gore nearly a quarter century ago. the question before the court is pretty simple actually. does section 3 of the 14th amendment, which bars, quote, an officer of the united states who, quote, engaged in insurrection from holding public office actually apply to the man who incited the january 6th riot, who tried to disrupt the peaceful transfer of power for the first time since the civil war. the colorado state supreme court has already ruled that, yes, trump should be barred from the ballot in that state based on the insurrection that he clearly engaged in. quote, president trump is disqualified from holding the office of president under section 3 because he is disqualified it would be a wrongful act under the election code for the secretary to list him as a candidate on the presidential primary ballot

and good evening to you and welcome to ayman tonight. we are following two major breaking news stories. the u.s. military has shot down that suspected chinese five a loon. and at a democratic national committee has voted to officially shake up the presidential primary calendar. then, trump legal trouble. one former associate might be flipping on his old boss. and making history. three black state attorneys general will join me to discuss their historic elections. police reform, and finding republican policies. i am ayman mohyeldin, let s get started. let s kick off this hour with some breaking news. as we mentioned, the u.s. military has shut down that suspected chinese surveillance balloon off the carolina coast on orders from president biden. at about 2:40 pm eastern and f 22 fighter jet fired a missile at that balloon, puncturing it, while it was about six nautical miles off the coast near myrtle beach, south carolina. president biden said this right after the balloon was
request privacy at this time. my god. both prominent figures in the news. we do not know the motivation for this attack. we know nothing about the assailant just yet. this all just happened in the last few minutes. we re grateful that mr. pelosi seems, per the statement, like he s going to make a recovery. but certainly a terrible tragedy. we ll try to figure out more about the assailant and what caused this attack. mika, we don t have a motive. we ll be very cautious about that right now. but there is a suspect in custody so we ll learn that very quickly, it would seem, whether this was an act of street crime, a burglary or break-in or something worse remains to be seen. but, again, speaker pelosi s husband, paul pelosi, was beat on the point he had to be taken to the hospital. oh, my god. he is going to make a recovery. speaker pelosi was not there. this all taking place inside their home in san francisco. and obviously no connection we don t know what the mo
