Self-portraits sought for Hill-Stead, Free Center exhibit celebrating Black art and identity Susan Dunne, Hartford Courant
The Free Center in Hartford and Middletown and the Hill-Stead Museum in Farmington are working together to present an exhibit of self-portraits by Black artists during events showcasing and celebrating Black art and identity.
The submission deadline is May 10 for the self-portraits, which can be in any form: painting, drawing, mixed media, photography, sculpture, video, poetry, performing arts.
Artworks will be split up into three exhibits, one for each venue. Hill-Stead will show artworks on June 5, to begin a month of Juneteenth events. On that day, ShopBlackCT will have a pop-up market, Amistad Center for Arts & Culture will do takeaway crafts, Kamora’s Cultural Corner will present “Black Art Heals” performances, Jocelyn Pleasant and her band will perform, quilter Ed Johnetta Miller will show her work and printmaker Kiayani Douglas w
