Labour unveils plans to support flexible working

LABOUR is set to unveil plans to make flexible working “a force for good” open to all as part of an overhaul of employment rights.  Deputy leader Angela Rayner is expected to say today that flexibility for employees does not just concern home working but is about making sure that job commitments “fit around people’s lives, instead of dictating their lives.” The Ashton-under-Lyne MP will commit a future Labour government to ending “one-sided flexibility” by offering flexitime, staggered hours and wriggle room around childcare and caring responsibilities to all from day one in a job.  A “right to switch off” and disconnect from work outside working hours is also needed, Ms Rayner will stress, plus greater access to workplaces, including those of home workers, for trade unions to protect staff.

Edifying annual celebration of labour struggles

THIS year’s Tolpuddle Martyrs Festival will again be an online event, although much of it will be filmed live from the Dorset village. Watch it on www.tolpuddlemartyrs.org.uk or the Tolpuddle Facebook and YouTube channels.  The festival comes just before the legal restrictions to control the pandemic are lifted and amid further confusion and mixed messages from a reckless and incompetent government. The panel debates and speeches will set out where the labour movement stands on key issues such as how to reset the world of work after the crisis and Angela Rayner will outline her role in leading the Labour Party’s approach to the future of work.

We need unity to resist the scourge of unemployment

FACING the threat to millions as furlough is ended, we hear about “job loss” every day, as workers as a result of factors beyond their control are thrown out of work, deprived of income and thrown into individual and collective community desperation and deprivation.  “Job loss” is a weasel term. We might as well refer to wilful murder as “life loss.”  It’s a term which avoids responsibility or guilt for the crime and presents disaster as an unfortunate but largely normal aspect of life. House keys and phones are lost. Jobs are not “lost” they are destroyed by the crises of the economic system, by the policies and actions of those that own and control that economy, imposed by their tame politicians.
