FACING the threat to millions as furlough is ended, we hear about “job loss” every day, as workers as a result of factors beyond their control are thrown out of work, deprived of income and thrown into individual and collective community desperation and deprivation.
“Job loss” is a weasel term. We might as well refer to wilful murder as “life loss.”
It’s a term which avoids responsibility or guilt for the crime and presents disaster as an unfortunate but largely normal aspect of life.
House keys and phones are lost. Jobs are not “lost” they are destroyed by the crises of the economic system, by the policies and actions of those that own and control that economy, imposed by their tame politicians.
THE Communist Party has called for solidarity with trade unionists across Britain who are preparing for a wave of industrial action.
Speaking to the party’s political committee on Wednesday evening, CP trade union organiser Andy Bain praised the determination of British Gas employees, London hospital staff and bus drivers, ScotRail and others to defend pay, conditions and health and safety standards at work.
Mr Bain said: “This reflects the growing realisation that employers and their Tory government are using the Covid-19 crisis as an opportunity to attack people’s rights and living standards.”
He also called for support for the national demonstration called by the People’s Assembly for June 26 in central London but cautioned that any mass mobilisation should be conditional on Covid-19 safety.
TODAY the Communist Party of Britain holds an aggregate for members who are trade union activists, against a background of escalation of the class struggle.
The party is growing and will use this gathering of longer-term and new members to educate, agitate and organise.
We meet in unprecedented times and all the sessions will begin from where we are now to build the struggle ahead.
Despite being the sixth-richest nation in the world, our neoliberal government has mismanaged the crisis to the extent that we are in the top six for the Covid-19 death rate and facing a collapse of the economy.
