When the late Prince Philip visited Malta’s Polo Club 15 years ago, he expressed surprise that the pitch had not yet been taken over by construction.
That’s a memory shared by the club’s honorary secretary Jean Vella.

Polo was one of the Duke of Edinburgh’s many passions. He would often play the sport while stationed in Malta in the 1950s, said Vella, who also met Prince Philip in 2015.
And whenever he visited the island following Independence in 1964, he always made time for the club.
Anglicans in Malta will join their counterparts across Europe for a Service of Prayer on Friday evening to mark the life and work of the late Prince Philip.
Queen Elizabeth II s husband Prince Philip, who recently spent more than a month in hospital and underwent a heart procedure, died on Friday, aged 99.
The Bishop in Europe, The Rt Revd Dr Robert Innes and the Suffragan Bishop, The Rt Revd Dr David Hamid, chief pastors to the Diocese in Europe, said:
“For our European diocese, we remember that Prince Philip was born in Corfu, and his links across our continent were extensive. When he lived in Malta, he and the then Princess Elizabeth worshipped every Sunday when he was not at sea at St Paul’s Pro Cathedral in Valletta, where he remained the Royal Patron of the Friends of St Paul’s Pro Cathedral.”
An ecumenical service was held at Our Lady of Loreto parish church in Għajnsielem, as part of the Christmas celebration.
Taking part in the service, which was organised by the Legion of Mary (Gozo), in collaboration with the Gozo Diocese and the Anglican Community, were Anglican chaplain and Chancellor of St Paul’s Anglican Pro-Cathedral, Valletta, Canon Simon Godfrey and Għajnsielem archpriest Frankie Bajada.
The service included Bible readings, hymns and short talks.
Children in biblical costume took part in a scaled down pageant and Lelio Spiteri conducted the service.
Meanwhile, the annual prayer service for Christian unity will be held on January 20 at the Assumption of Our Lady parish church, Żebbuġ, Gozo, at 4.30pm. The theme will be “Abide in my love… you shall bear much fruit”. John 15:1-17
