River Test gets major clean up after diesel spill

Romsey and Southampton North MP, Caroline Nokes hosted a round-table discussion for the lead organisations tackling the recent diesel spill in the River Test. She also hopes those responsible for the pollution, will be actioned and fines should pay for damages caused. Ms Nokes also believes the Environmental Agency needs more funding to provide better monitoring of areas close to the river. The fuel spill has left a significant impact on the nature reserve and earlier this month, the Hampshire and Isle of Wight Trust linked the pollution to a dead cygnet and some fish as animals were seen covered in fuel.

Deal agreed to help protect Solent habitats from nitrates

New Development Pictures - The Augusta Park Development in Andover. 23rd August, 2018 A DEAL has been agreed to protect habitats in the Solent from nitrates. Test Valley Borough Council (TVBC) is moving forward with new policy which is aimed at helping to protect internationally designated habitats in the Solent. Credits have been purchased by the council from countryside land in the South of the borough to help mitigate increases in nitrates from new developments. This comes as excessive nitrates in the water are said to be having an adverse impact on habitats and species. Over the past two years, following Natural England advice, planning applications for residential development and overnight accommodation submitted to the council have required mitigation for any potential impact from the additional levels of nitrates they would generate from wastewater and land use change.

Rotary Mayor s Picnic in Romsey is cancelled

Mayor s Picnic in Romsey YET another staple event in the Romsey town diary has been cancelled. The annual Rotary Mayor s Picnic planned for July 18 will no longer go ahead due to coronavirus. County and borough councillor Nick Adams-King said: Another regular Romsey event cancelled as a consequence of the uncertainty and continuation of restrictions. Once more understandable, but a massive disappointment, most of all for the very many volunteers who work so hard to make this such a wonderful event each year. Huge thanks are due to them. Let s hope Walk the Test Way is even more popular this year to help raise some of the money which has been lost to our local charities through the cancellation of the mayor s picnic.
