Some cheer amid the despair

“IT was the worst of times. it was the age of foolishness, it was the. epoch of incredulity,. it was the season of Darkness,. it was the winter of despair.” Years from now, this rephrased opening of Charles Dickens’ celebrated novel, A Tale of Two Cities, might be apt in describing what Malaysia is undergoing today. It sure looks like the nastiest of times. We are facing an economic crisis and people are anguished by adversity and hunger brought about by how we are handling the Covid-19 pandemic. The situation has turned a lot more dire since the country came under the third full movement control order in June. Unlike a year ago, it is not just people in the lowest income group of B40 who are suffering but also those in the M40 middle income group. The hardship is being felt throughout the country, as many private sector employees have lost their jobs with the closure of companies and businesses.

DAP s multiracial future Modified10:42 pm Key Highlights DAP’s multiracial future DAP s Anthony Loke acknowledged what the party rarely spoke about publicly - the tussle between the pro-multiracial and pro-Chinese factions in DAP. Loke said he did not discount efforts that were being made to oust DAP leaders who want the party to become more multiracial. Conservative forces in the party have grown stronger as they rode on the Chinese backlash from 2019 over the introduction of three pages of Jawi lessons for Year 4 students, putting the pro-multiracial faction, which defended the policy, on the defensive. DAP veteran Lim Kit Siang was among those who had put himself in the crossfire to defend the policy as he urged Malaysians to set aside their mutual fear.

I was a political lawyer, but only voted for the first time in 2008, admits former AG Thomas

PETALING JAYA: Former attorney general Tan Sri Tommy Thomas has admitted that he only voted for the very first time in a general election at the age of 56 in 2008, despite his deep passion for politics. In his recently released memoir My Story: Justice in the Wilderness, Thomas said that he was smitten with the US and British politics, influenced by his late father. He said he never thought of the need to cast his vote in a general election, as Barisan (Nasional) was voted in, general election after general election . He also claimed that he was instrumental in advising opposition MPs to take a stand against the then Election Commission (EC) in 2013 after the general election over the indelible ink scandal.
