“Here,” says Gabriella Possum Nungurrayi, pointing to the centre of a map of Australia. “I come from here. Born here. Papunya. Red sand desert country.”
Then the artist’s finger traces a line down south to Melbourne, where she has been living and painting for many years. She sighs. “I go back once a year to see my people, my family,” she says, quietly. “I miss home.”
We’re in the cavernous cellars of the Mitchelton winery, near Nagambie, 120 kilometres north of Melbourne. Jayco caravans owner Gerry Ryan bought the winery in 2011 and in 2017 converted a section of the cellars into an impressive gallery of Indigenous art.

It is a trend that could reshape regional economies for decades to come. Record numbers of Australians are turning their backs on pandemic-hit big cities, taking advantage of being able to work from home, and relocating to commutable country towns and their lure of open space, fresh air and cheaper housing. This, in turn, is creating new jobs and business opportunities.

Seymour: breakfast from 8 am and flag-raising at 10.15 am at Kings Park. Entry only via Tallarook St, Seymour.
Broadford: breakfast from 7 am to 9 am. The day s events will finish at 3 pm. The main attraction will be a live stream of an official celebration of Rotary turning 100. This will be held between 12.30 pm and 2 pm and will be shown on a large television screen set up at the Island Reserve on High St, Broadford, where the Australia Day event will be held.
This will be held on Monday, February 1, 2021 from 3pm to 7pm at the Nagambie Lakes Regatta Centre. This means interested people can drop-in at any time.
