“Here,” says Gabriella Possum Nungurrayi, pointing to the centre of a map of Australia. “I come from here. Born here. Papunya. Red sand desert country.”
Then the artist’s finger traces a line down south to Melbourne, where she has been living and painting for many years. She sighs. “I go back once a year to see my people, my family,” she says, quietly. “I miss home.”
We’re in the cavernous cellars of the Mitchelton winery, near Nagambie, 120 kilometres north of Melbourne. Jayco caravans owner Gerry Ryan bought the winery in 2011 and in 2017 converted a section of the cellars into an impressive gallery of Indigenous art.
