NIAGARA, Wis. Niagara native Andy Graff is drawing attention while making his mark as a first-time novelist.
Graff, son of Kevin and Nina Graff, serves on the faculty, is an English department faculty member at Wittenberg University in Ohio.
He recently had his debut novel “Raft of Stars” published, which has drawn critical acclaim from nearly all corners of the literary world.
In getting to where he is today, Graff took a round-about path to becoming an author. After graduating from Niagara High School in 2000, he joined the Air Force just before the Sept. 11, 2001 attacks.
He served a term in Afghanistan as an aircraft mechanic. After his discharge, Graff went to a technical school with plans to become a paramedic. However, fate entered the picture and he decided to pursue his dream of becoming a writer.
IRON MOUNTAIN Aaron J. Breithaupt, 31 of Iron Mountain, passed away Wednesday, April 14, 2021.
He was born March 15, 1990, in Las Vegas, the son of Arthur Breithaupt and the late Lisa Breithaupt. Aaron graduated from Niagara High School, class of 2008. He worked avidly as a welder at the Marinette Marine.
Aaron fiercely loved his family, friends, and coworkers, particularly his niece, Anastasia. He enjoyed all manner of outdoor activities like side-by-side riding, hiking, working on vehicles, and making maple syrup. Aaron was also an exceptional and talented welder who loved to go to work every day to weld and spend time with his coworkers, many of whom grew to be close friends.

NIAGARA, Wis. Â The Niagara Lions Club again will provide $2,000 to support four scholarships this year that will be presented to Niagara High School 2021 graduates, President Gordon Behnke announced.
The club’s scholarship program began in 1986 and has grown to include the Roy Eggen Memorial Lions Scholarship, the Dwayne Smith Memorial Lions Scholarship, the Russell and Carol Sauld Memorial Scholarship and the Kerry Grippen Lions Club Scholarship. Recipients of the four 2020 Lions Club scholarships included Cassandra Gill, Sydney Dunkes, Brady Steinbrecher and Jayden Payette.
To apply for any of the four $500 scholarships, students must have been accepted at a university or technical college. The usual deadline each year for submitting applications is April 15 Thursday of this week and they must be turned in at the high school office. Selection of the recipients will be made by Niagara school personnel in accordance with Niagara Lions Club Scholarship criter
Dorothy J. Stankevich
IRON MOUNTAIN Dorothy J. Stankevich, 82, of Iron Mountain, died Tuesday, March 2, 2021, at Freeman Nursing Home and Rehabilitation Community in Kingsford.
Dorothy was born March 28, 1938, in Iron Mountain to the late Jerome and Evelyn (Olive) Forcey. She grew up in the area and graduated from Niagara High School. She married James Stankevich on Nov. 3, 1956, at American Martyrs Church in Kingsford. Together, she and James raised four children.
Dorothy spent many years in retail. She enjoyed square dancing in her younger years. Later on she stayed busy with crocheting and other crafts along with a unique passion for collecting frogs. She loved to sit by the river with her dogs and enjoy the outdoors.

Norway Township Board will hold a budget hearing for the fiscal year 2021-22 budget at 5 p.m. today at Norway Township Hall, N1732 Mission St., Vulcan. The property tax millage rate proposed to be levied to support the proposed budget will be a subject of the hearing. The board’s regular meeting will follow at 5:30 p.m.
Florence County Board of Education will meet at 5:15 p.m. today in the auditorium at Florence High School/Middle School. The agenda includes referendum planning, teacher retirements and a closed session for consideration of contracts and vacancies. The board will meet again in the auditorium at 5 p.m. Tuesday and 5 p.m. Thursday and go into closed session to interview candidates for superintendent.
