Small earthquakes felt in east Tennessee on Easter Sunday

East Tennessee experienced a couple of mild earthquakes on Easter Sunday, according to the United States Geological Survey. The first 1.4 magnitude earthquake registered a little more than 5 miles below Friendsville on at 9:48 p.m. Sunday. The second 2.0 magnitude earthquake registered shortly before midnight nearly 8 miles below the earth s surface at Cades Cove inside the Great Smoky Mountains National Park at Townsend. The Great Smoky Mountains National Park Service said the small earthquake did not cause any damage to park facilities or impacts to visitors at Cades Cove. The park said the highest recorded magnitude 3.2 earthquake occurred in the park 1979. Of the 20 recorded earthquakes detected within park boundaries since record-keeping began, none have caused detectable damage, the parks service said.
