The United States Geological Survey said earthquakes in the area are frequent but usually small. East Tennessee experienced a couple of mild earthquakes on Easter Sunday, according to the United States Geological Survey.  The first 1.4 magnitude earthquake registered a little more than 5 miles below Friendsville on at 9:48 p.m. Sunday. The second 2.0 magnitude earthquake registered shortly before midnight nearly 8 miles below the earth s surface at Cades Cove inside the Great Smoky Mountains National Park at Townsend.
