LITTER heroes are taking part in a month-long campaign to clean up Dorset s streets. The Litter Free Dorset Challenge has begun, with June 1 marking the first day in a month-long effort to reduce the amount of litter left discarded on streets, beaches and in local communities across the county. Around 120 participants, known as litter heroes , signed up to take part in the campaign when it was announced last month and, alongside the option of creating their own challenge, Litter Free Dorset suggested three challenges for heroes to take on. More than two thirds of participants will be taking part in a 10 times challenge, where they pick up litter in their local area 10 times over the course of June. Other participants opted for the 10-minute daily challenge, while some signed up to complete the 10-hour challenge, where they litter pick for 10 hours in one day.
The popular community drive had to be cancelled last year due to the coronavirus pandemic. Beach cleans at 21 locations have been organised over the May 22/23 weekend, for what will be the 31st beach clean organised by Litter Free Coast and Sea. On the Saturday beach cleans at Shell Bay, Studland; Knoll Beach, Studland; Middle Beach, South Beach and Old Harry Rocks, Studland; Southbourne Beach; North Beach, Swanage, and Boscombe Pier will be taking place. Then on the Sunday litter-picks will take place at Sandbanks, Highcliffe Beach, Lulworth Cove and Durdle Door, among others. Litter Free Coast and Sea is running the event in partnership with Clean Jurassic Coast.
DOZENS of Dorset s beaches will be cleaned up with the return of a popular community drive this year - and volunteers are now being urged to sign up to help. The Great Dorset Beach Clean annually attracts hundreds of volunteer litter pickers to help keep the county s beaches clean, but it had to be cancelled last year due to the coronavirus pandemic. Delighted organisers have announced the 31st annual event will return over the weekend of May 22 and 23, with beach cleans at 21 locations lined up. Litter Free Coast and Sea is running the event in partnership with Clean Jurassic Coast. Organisations and community groups, including Dorset Wildlife Trust, National Trust and Leave Only Footprints, will be involved in running the cleans.
