It’s a project meant to honor the late state representative, who was on his own path of recovery from an addiction to alcohol.
Called the John Kivela House, it will be a safe space for up to six men who have been sober for at least 30 days. They’ll receive therapy, get a job and undergo intensive case management.

Warmer weather, sunshine and a COVID–19 vaccine may mean small social gatherings are around the corner for many of us.
But some may still struggle with isolation, especially those who are in addiction recovery or are seeking recovery.
We talked exclusively with two people who have a keen understanding of what it means to be in recovery.
Bob and Carroll Ann Swanson built their careers in social work helping people in addiction recovery. Bob, himself has been in recovery for over 30 years.

United Way of EUP hosting phone drive

The United Way of the Eastern Upper Peninsula will be hosting a used phone donation drive through the end of March.
These donations will benefit clients in recovery at Great Lakes Recovery Center, Inc. as well as clients seeking help from other local human resource organizations. COVID-19 has made it harder for those to book an appointment with any organization since most are by appointment only. Being without a phone becomes a barrier for those trying to schedule job interviews, participate in telehealth appointments, or reconnect with family.
“A lot of our clients don t always have access to a telephone or internet which complicates a lot of things, but especially difficult for making appointments/filing claims with Department of Health and Human Services, Secretary of State, Chippewa Luce Mackinac Community Action Agency, etc.,” said William Mourufas, job development/resource specialist at Great Lakes Recovery Centers, In

MARQUETTE Great Lakes Recovery Centers in Ishpeming is spreading awareness of suicide prevention.
Silent Snow Sports for Suicide Prevention is designed to aid in mental health through cardiovascular exercise and fresh air. Interested parties can participate any place anytime on the week of Feb. 7.
“Everyone is welcome to join in on the sports or just donate,” said Amy Poirier, the Great Lakes Recovery Centers Foundation coordinator.
The proceeds will benefit the West End Suicide Prevention and LIVE campaign. Those who are interested can register for $10 online for a free mask or register via phone.
