Warning signs and resources for people with alcoholism

April is Alcohol Awareness Month, reminding us people should exercise caution and watch out for warning signs of alcoholism in family/friends year-round.
Excessive alcohol use is responsible for about 95,000 deaths a year in the United States. Deaths due to excessive drinking account for 1 in 10 total deaths among working-age adults aged 20 to 64 years. In 2010, excessive alcohol use cost the US economy $249 billion, or $2.05 a drink. About 40% of these costs were paid by federal, state, and local governments.

LANSING Governor Gretchen Whitmer announced the following appointments to the Michigan Community Corrections Board, Propane Commission, Correctional Officers’ Training Council, and the School Safety Commission.
Michigan Community Corrections Board
Martha D. Anderson, of Troy, is a judge for the 6th Circuit Court of Oakland County. She holds a Bachelor of Arts in English from Wayne State University and a Juris Doctor degree from the University of Detroit Law School. Judge Anderson is reappointed to represent a judge of the circuit court for a term commencing Apr. 9, and expiring March 31, 2025.
Brandon D. Davis, of Muskegon, is the director of oversight and public accountability for the City of Grand Rapids. He holds a Bachelor of Applied Arts from Central Michigan University and a Juris Doctor degree from Wayne State University Law School. Mr. Davis is appointed to represent a member of city government for a term commencing Apr. 9, and expiring March 31, 2025.

United Way of EUP hosting phone drive

The United Way of the Eastern Upper Peninsula will be hosting a used phone donation drive through the end of March.
These donations will benefit clients in recovery at Great Lakes Recovery Center, Inc. as well as clients seeking help from other local human resource organizations. COVID-19 has made it harder for those to book an appointment with any organization since most are by appointment only. Being without a phone becomes a barrier for those trying to schedule job interviews, participate in telehealth appointments, or reconnect with family.
“A lot of our clients don t always have access to a telephone or internet which complicates a lot of things, but especially difficult for making appointments/filing claims with Department of Health and Human Services, Secretary of State, Chippewa Luce Mackinac Community Action Agency, etc.,” said William Mourufas, job development/resource specialist at Great Lakes Recovery Centers, In
