PPP’s lead widens against PML-N in NA-249 recount According to ECP, Qadir Khan Madokhel’s winning margin against Miftah Ismail increased to 909 votes from 683 KARACHI: The Pakistan Peoples Party (PPP) has emerged victorious by a greater margin after the recounting of votes for the NA-249 by-election. After the recount of votes polled across all 276 stations, PPP’s Abdul Qadir Mandokhel secured 15,656 votes, whereas PML-N candidate Miftah Ismail got 14,747, showing a victory margin of 909 votes. When the unofficial by-poll results were first announced, Mandokhel had won with 16,156 votes, while Ismail came in second with 15,473, reflecting a difference of 683 votes. In the vote recount, Mandokhel lost 500 votes, while Ismail 726 votes.

PML-N leader Miftah Ismail has penned a letter to the Chief Election Commissioner demanding a recount of votes. In his letter, Miftah Ismail has stated that the results from more than 30 polling stations have not been received. He has also expressed serious reservations regarding the attitude of some presiding officers. PML-N President Shehbaz Sharif has also demanded a recount, saying that as per law, a recount is possible if difference of votes is less than 5%. Shehbaz said he hoped the Chief Election Commissioner will ensure the requirements of the constitution and transparency are met.

The ECP said in a two-page note that since every candidate was complaining of how polling had taken place, that they could withhold the results, which had not been declared final anyway.

In his petitions, Miftah Ismail demanded a forensic audit of 15 polling stations in the constituency as well as verification of voters’ fingerprints. These petitions come in result of Pakistan People’s Party (PPP) win in Thursday’s NA-249 by-election, with its candidate Qadir Khan Mandokhel securing 16,156 votes while Miftah Ismail was a close second with 15,473 votes.
