Quarantining, stay-at-home orders and social distancing during the COVID-19 pandemic left many Americans with feelings of loneliness. With aging Americans among the highest at risk, that left many older veterans also feeling isolated while trying to stay safe within the confines of their own homes.
Ryan Winslow American Legion Post 911 in Hoover, Ala., realized that early on, and has since made it a point to reach out to those needing a Buddy Check the most.
“We have 47 members who served during World War II and Korea,” Post 911 Commander Ginger Branson said via an article posted by Patricia A. Douglas, Post 911’s public affairs coordinator. “With the lockdown, we knew it would be vital to connect with our older members.”

Although Buddy Checks already were happening prior to the coronavirus pandemic, American Legion Family members recognized an even greater importance over the past year. The results: thousands upon thousands of phone calls, emails, social media posts, postcards and safely conducted in-person visits were made to fellow veterans in the midst of COVID-19.
American Legion Post 512 in Carmel, Calif., has made Buddy Checks an ongoing program during the pandemic – and recently saw just how critical one phone call can be.

At 55 years old, Nevada Legionnaire Tony Mascari isn’t in what is considered to be the higher at-risk age group for COVID-19. But the commander of the Spirit of Freedom Post 76 Las Vegas can sympathize with those people who are in that group.
And he’s especially sympathetic to those members of Post 76 who have been forced to stay home during the pandemic for health reasons. For the reason, and also because of regular messaging from American Legion National Commander James W. “Bill” Oxford, the post was dedicated to reaching as many of its 850-plus members as possible.
