The first phase of the panchayat elections in 20 mandals in Chittoor revenue division went peacefully, registering more than 80% turnout.
The voting, which began at 6.30 a.m., picked up momentum and crossed 50% in all the mandals by noon. After a brief respite for an hour, the polling touched its peak by the time the schedule got closed at 4.00 p.m. The mandals of Bangarupalem, Irala, Puthalapattu, Tavanampalle in Puthalapattu assembly constituency received overwhelming response from the voters.

Bangladeshi people cutting across faith and ethnicity are mourning a prominent Catholic singer and musician who enriched both Christian religious and national music for decades.
Joseph Komol Rodrigues died in a private hospital in capital Dhaka on Jan. 31. He was 68.
Rodrigues, a Catholic father of two, originally among the faithful at St. Nicholas of Tolentino Church at Nagari in Gazipur district near Dhaka, had been suffering from kidney disease for years.

GREATER NOIDA: Several residential areas in the city, including Alpha, Beta, Gamma, Delta and Pi 3, are likely to get Ganga water supply by May.
The Greater Noida Industrial Development Authority (GNIDA) has built pipeline and reservoirs for distributing 85 cusecs (207.95 MLD) of water from the Upper Ganga Canal in Haridwar and trials for the first phase (covering the populated areas) to supply 51.09 cusecs are likely to begin from mid-March. Currently, residents of Greater Noida get treated groundwater taken from ranny wells and tube wells.
“We will be able to provide Ganga water to residents of Greater Noida from May this year. While work to lay pipelines and build reservoirs was done earlier, we will start trials from mid-March,” said PK Kaushik, general manager (projects), GNIDA.
