With Chittoor district logging a record 2,764 COVID-19 cases and 54 deaths in the 24 hours ending Friday morning, the district police instructed its personnel in the Madanapalle, Palamaner, Chittoor, Puttur and Sri City sub-divisions to prohibit public gatherings for festivities such as ‘jatara’, or ‘harikatha’ and ‘burrakatha’ in the rural areas.
Hectic activity is generally witnessed in the rural hinterland during May as villagers gather to celebrate local festivals.
Such celebrations had been done away with following the lockdown imposed after the pandemic first broke out in 2020.

The first phase of the panchayat elections in 20 mandals in Chittoor revenue division went peacefully, registering more than 80% turnout.
The voting, which began at 6.30 a.m., picked up momentum and crossed 50% in all the mandals by noon. After a brief respite for an hour, the polling touched its peak by the time the schedule got closed at 4.00 p.m. The mandals of Bangarupalem, Irala, Puthalapattu, Tavanampalle in Puthalapattu assembly constituency received overwhelming response from the voters.

Parsudih Police on Tuesday detained 17 men for allegedly gangraping a minor at the locality on Sunday night.
The 17-year-old girl, who works as a daily wager, has accused as many as 22 men for committing the crime when she went out on a picnic to the nearby Hata area on Sunday morning.
She alleged that the youths raped her one after the other through Sunday night, as a result of which she could not even bring herself to the police station. However, on Tuesday morning, she filed a complaint with the police, accusing the youths of stopping her at a secluded place in Parsudih where they committed the crime. On the wee hours of Monday, the accused men dropped her off near her rented house at the Chandni Chowk area in Shankarpur.

The Chittoor police on Saturday nabbed two youth and recovered gold ornaments worth ₹10 lakh and two motorcycles from them, while they were moving suspiciously at the bypass road on the outskirts of the town. Interrogation revealed that the duo was allegedly wanted in seven chain-snatching and two motorbikes lifting cases in and around Chittoor during the last three months.
Addressing a press conference here, Deputy Superintendent of Police (Law and Order) N. Sudhakar Reddy, and Circle-Inspector (Chittoor West) C. Lakshmikanth Reddy said the accused, identified as Mohammad Sayeed (23) of Punepalle of Penumuru mandal of Chittoor district, and Tajamul Pasha of Hydersab Majid of Karnataka, were allegedly involved in a series of chain-snatching offence
