As a new city council heads into its first budget process together, city staff say they are in a position to not only restore items like street maintenance that were cut because of pandemic, but also put more money towards areas like housing and homelessness.

San Antonio – The City of San Antonio expects it will receive a sizable slice of the $1.9 trillion American Rescue Plan enough to replace two years’ worth of lost revenue and then some.
Though it hasn’t received an official notification yet, staff estimates the city is due $326 million in local aid under the latest COVID-19 stimulus bill. Bexar County is estimated to get $388 million, and the city believes dedicated funding for specific issues like rental assistance, homelessness assistance, the airport, and childcare will also be coming in.

The City of San Antonio wasted no time in getting to its key points of discipline reform during opening negotiations with the San Antonio Police Officers Association over a new five-year contract Friday.
Officials with both the union and the city said they are coming to the table with the intent of good faith negotiations, but both of the last contract negotiations with the police and fire unions have either ended up in court or prolonged debates with the invocation of arbitration. The police discussions started as an election for city council begins with a ballot initiative that could impact how negotiations move forward.
