Teenage pregnancies up in Baguio

Published May 13, 2021, 6:12 PM BAGUIO CITY – Adolescent and teenage pregnancies have been on the rise here amid the COVID-19 pandemic. City Health Service Office head Rowena Galpo said adolescent and teen pregnancies increased from 21.93 percent in 2019 to 24.9 percent in 2020 compared to the target of less than 37 per 1,000 females aged five- to 19-years-old. Galpo assured, however, that much has been done in this service area and her office continues to work with other concerned departments and agencies, including parental care. “This steady collaboration will surely improve the health concerns of the city’s adolescents and youth,” Galpo said. On the other hand, the city’s modern contraceptive prevalence rate increased from a low 13 percent in 2019 to a more respectable 21 percent in 2020 compared to the target of 27 percent.

10 minors, including 2-year-old, get COVID-19 in Baguio City

Published March 16, 2021, 1:24 PM BAGUIO CITY – The City Health Service Office (CHSO) recorded 10 minors afflicted with COVID-19 as it tallied 45 new cases on Monday, March 15. The CHSO said of the 10 minors, eight are female, two are male and are aged 2 to 16-years-old. The 2-year-old child afflicted with the virus came from the Northern part of the City. They are all contacts of those who were previously infected with the virus. As of March 15, Baguio City has 693 active cases, 113 deaths and 5,744 recoveries from the total 6,550 confirmed cases. Meanwhile, Mayor Benjamin Magalong said the city has been given the go signal for the use of antigen test as border entry requisite

Dog bite incidents up in Baguio in 2020

Published March 12, 2021, 5:44 PM BAGUIO CITY – The City Epidemiology and Surveillance Unit of the City Health Service Office has reported a 36 percent increase in dog bite incidents here last year compared to the same period in 2019. CHSO Medical Officer IV Dr. Donnabel Panes said most of these happened where the dog bite victims live. There were 3,520 dog bite incidents in the city last year compared to the 2,704 in 2019. Panes said no rabies cases reported in the city since 2004 because of the city government’s aggressive anti-rabies campaign. City Veterinarian Dr. Brigit Piok urged dog owners here to vaccinate their pets against rabies as March is Rabies Prevention Month with the theme “Maging Responsableng Amo: Huwag Hayaang Gumala ang Alagang Aso’t Pusa.” Piok said the city government intends to vaccinate some 60,000 dogs this year.

2 senior citizens latest to die from COVID in Baguio

(MANILA BULLETIN) The CHSO said the latest fatalities are  a 87-year-old female and a 68-year-old male. Nninety-seven persons have died from the deadly disease here as of Feb. 4. Of the 35 new cases,12 have been contact traced and 23 were found thru expanded testing. There are  461  active cases,  4,539 recoveries, and 5,097 confirmed cases at present. The CSHO also reported that 3,250 persons were swabbed during the three-day Aggressive Community Testing (ACT) from Feb. 1 to 3  conducted by the National Task Force and the Bases Conversion and Development of Authority (BCDA),Office of the Civil Defense-Cordillera, Bureau of Fire National, and John Hay Management Corp. (JHMC) at Melvin Jones Field.
