Although an import to the area, the South African coral tree (
Erythrina caffra) has been the official tree of the City of Los Angeles since Arbor Day, 1966 and one of the best places to see it in L.A. is along San Vicente Boulevard between 26th Street and Brigham Avenue, in the Brentwood Park section of Brentwood. This stretch of coral trees along the median, where the Red Line trolley once ran, was designated a Los Angeles Historic-Cultural Monument in 1976 and is funded and maintained by the Brentwood Community Council.

Historic and specimen tree list grows by two following council action
The council authorized the removal of a declining tree on North Lake Way while adding three additional trees to the nearly 50-year-old program.

The town s historic and specimen tree list grew by two last week after the Town Council agreed to add three trees and remove one.
In a unanimous vote, the council authorized the removal of a previously protected tree at 501 N. Lake Way while adding trees at Pan s Garden, Crescent Park, and Miraflores and North Lake Way.
The changes came after Town Arborist Richard Maxwell inspected the 106 trees on the list as part of an annual survey to determine which ones were of suitable quality and condition to remain as historic or specimen trees.
