The Golden Globes are changing their name to the Bronze Globes. You heard it here first: The awards show is no longer worthy of the precious-metal moniker and has been asked to drop it from their name. I jest but not about the show’s viewership decline, down 64 percent from 2020, to fewer than 7 million viewers for the 2021 event that aired in late February. For context, in 2004, the Golden Globes show drew 26.8 million viewers. Some attributed this year’s sharp drop to the lack of diversity among award winners and judges. That makes sense except anger often prompts more people to tune in and vocalize their discontent. Others might say the awkwardness of an awards show staged at great distance was painful to watch, but at least those critiquing it did watch. Or perhaps it’s the pandemic’s fault, and all live events are getting hit by bad viewership.

Not Even to Sit In the Audience : Rosie Perez Calls Out the Academy Awards, Blames Racism and Bigotry for Not Being Invited Back

Actress Rosie Perez has film credits dating as far back as 1989, according to her IMDB profile. She is still very much active in the industry, with her latest venture being the 2020 television series “The Flight Attendant.” So, it came as a surprise when, during a recent sit-down, the Brooklyn native told Variety that she hadn’t been invited to the Academy Awards in over 25 years.  “Not even to sit in the audience, not to present, nothing and I’m a member. I love the Academy Awards. I cheer on my peers, but it hurts,” the 56-year-old expressed. “It’s like when your home team doesn’t ask you to come back into the stadium after you got up to bat and hit the home run.”

Both hosts performed their duties from separate cities, on opposite coasts. Fey was in New York at the Rainbow Room, a famous venue located at 30 Rockefeller Plaza (an address also known as 30 Rock, after which Fey’s sitcom was named). Amy Poehler hosted from Los Angeles. Fey and Poehler were present in person, as were award presenters including Awkwafina, Joaquin Phoenix, Tiffany Haddish, Angela Bassett, and Margot Robbie. Nominees, however, attended remotely, and winners delivered their acceptance speeches via video link.
